With the move to the new school approaching many students worry what will happen without an essential part of THS: the courtyard. It sits right in the middle of the building and is a place where students walk from class to class and seniors enjoy it during study halls and lunches.
Students are concerned that the new school will not have courtyard access, which was upsetting to students, especially senior class president Justin Chau who had already experienced all the courtyard has to offer.
“I think the loss of the courtyard is terrible it’s not just used as a lunchbreak area its used as a place to escape the classroom as seniors we have earned the privilege to work independently there without teachers, underclassmen look up to the seniors because of the privileges they get such as eating lunch in the courtyard or working on their own during study hall.”
These concerns, however, have been addressed by Assistant Principal Mr. Marchand who stated that there will be a shared courtyard between the middle school and high school.
“It won’t be just like the courtyard here because there’s no wall or fencing…it’s a nice little outdoor classroom-type setup.” So although there will be a courtyard in the new school, the administration is not yet sure how students will be able to utilize it.
According to Mr. Marchand, security would need to watch over the new courtyard to allow students to use it, and finding that kind of staffing may be difficult. Marchand hopes a solution can be found. “We really like when you guys get to eat outside. We will try and find a way to make it happen but we can’t make promises.”
