Question: Have you ever had a teacher that you just can’t stand? Or maybe a teacher that you love but other people hate? What are the qualities that make someone love or hate a teacher?
A great teacher should make you want to be around them and enjoy the class.
They should teach like they actually want to be there. Why would you become a teacher if you’re gonna teach like a cardboard box that came to life? Or maybe even like a cardboard box that has not come to life.
Teachers should be enthusiastic! I’m not saying they always have to be energetic since not everyone can be like that all the time but when you attend a class you should not be falling asleep. I think that you learn less from boring teachers than you do with fun teachers. Think about it. Which classes do you remember more? Ones where the teacher just talks the whole class? Or classes where the teacher interacts with the students and you do activities? You’d pick the second option, right? Just blatantly telling someone information is not the same as teaching because if I wanted the information straight up read to me, I would just google it. To teach you have to do more than just tell students the information. You have to elaborate, show examples, get students involved!
Teachers should be nice and supportive to students. They should believe in them. Like if a student is struggling with something the teacher should help them learn and be patient. Students shouldn’t be yelled at or treated badly because they don’t understand the lesson. It is a teacher’s responsibility to make sure that they understand. It’s literally their job. If a student pays attention in class and they don’t understand then the teacher needs to teach better. However if a student sleeps all class and doesn’t pay attention it’s their fault for not understanding the lesson. You can’t just yell at your teacher for doing their job. Students will be like “I hate this teacher, they always yell at me for talking during class and give me bad grades!” Maybe it’s because you don’t pay attention or do the work!
Moving onto the next quality, teachers should be respectful to students. But respect is a two way street. If you don’t respect the teacher, why should they respect you? Teachers can respect students by treating them kindly, not like they’re dumb, or like a toddler, or like they’re robots. A big thing some teachers need to learn is that you can’t just not let students use the bathroom. Like teachers who say, “You can only use the bathroom 4 times per semester!”. Uhm… I don’t think you can do that. News flash! We’re people not robot learning bots! And people need to use the bathroom. It’s understandable if someone asks in the middle of directions and has to wait but you can’t just say no.
Now enough with my opinion, according to the “qualities of a great teacher” form, posted here on The Raider Report; over 90% of the the students who responded agreed that teachers should engage with students as well as have a passion for teaching. Over 80% of the students said teachers should give you information with examples rather than blatantly state it as only 17% (11/64) of students said they like that style of teaching. Along with that, only 12% (8/64) students said they like having a strict teacher.
