“New building, new sport” is the motto for the new boys’ club lacrosse team. Having a new team and fresh opportunities is exciting—especially since Torrington High School hasn’t added a new sport in quite some time. The team may be small, but their aspirations are big.
Anthony Golino, head coach of the lacrosse team, hopes the roster will expand this year. “No level of experience is needed,” he says. “This is a brand new sport to our high school, and very few of our players have any history with lacrosse. We’re trying to encourage our players by reminding them that every sport is new to someone at some point in their career, no matter their age.”
Golino and the players are eager to see more students join, and they feel hopeful about the season ahead. Senior Dylan Moore joined the team this year without any prior experience. “It’s going to be physically and mentally challenging, and I wanted to try something new before senior year started,” he said.
Moore is optimistic about the club lacrosse season and hopes it inspires other new sports to take root, like men’s volleyball—or maybe even pickleball. “Lacrosse is a very big sport in Connecticut. THS is behind,” Moore said. While hopeful, he also recognizes the hurdles: “Minimal games, players not knowing how to play, a small first-year team—we’re not experienced.”
Sophomore Nick Coleman brings eight years of lacrosse experience to the team and was quick to join. “I played from kindergarten through eighth grade, and I enjoy it—it’s a fun sport,” he said.
He agrees with Moore that “lack of experience” is a challenge. “Most have never played before, and it’s a hard sport to learn,” he added. Still, the entire team is excited for the spring 2025 season and sees a bright future for lacrosse at THS.
