The THS Softball team is small but mighty!
The THS softball team may be young, but they’re proving that experience isn’t everything. With only three seniors—Carla Ortiz, Jaslene Torres, and co-captain Lilah Boulli—the Raiders have relied on teamwork, leadership, and hustle to stay competitive this season.
Currently sitting at 4–6, the team is showing signs of strong chemistry and growth. Head coach Sarah Arburr has praised the group’s work ethic, and key players like Boulli and junior pitcher Sophia Pergola have stepped into leadership roles, helping guide the underclassmen. There are eight underclassmen.
Pergola says the team is doing “much better” than last year. She credits the mix of new and returning players for creating a new and more successful program.
“We’re a really young team,” said Pergola after a recent practice, but added that everyone is working hard to get to the same level. She sees her role as helping teammates build confidence and stay motivated.
The team has had standout moments both offensively and defensively, with multiple players contributing at the plate and in the field. On the mound, the Raiders have kept games close, including a strong showing in a tight 2–0 loss to Naugatuck where they allowed just two hits and racked up 18 strikeouts.
With the season at the halfway point, the Raiders are focused on continuing to improve. Between a core of returning players and a wave of new talent, they’re building something exciting—and they’re just getting started.
Tomorrow, the team faces off against Wolcott, which will be a tough game, according to Pergola. However, she has high hopes for the rest of the season.
