This Friday at 3:00 p.m., Torrington High School welcomed back a distinguished alumnus: Dr. Justin McManus, Class of 2006 and the current Director of the UCLA Bruin Marching Band. McManus, who now leads one of the most visible collegiate ensembles in the nation, returned to THS to speak with the band about his journey from Torrington to the national stage.
During his visit, McManus reflected on his formative years in Torrington and the role that music played in shaping his career. “The lessons you learn in music will help you in life no matter what you do and where you go,” he told students, encouraging them to see band as not just a performance, but a training ground for teamwork, leadership, and resilience.
After graduating from THS, McManus earned a degree in Music Education from the University of Connecticut, where he performed in and later directed UConn’s marching and pep bands. His career then took him to the University of Notre Dame, where he served as Assistant Director of the famed “Band of the Fighting Irish,” before returning to UConn as Director of Athletic Bands. Along the way, he conducted ensembles across the world, from South Africa to Spain, and became recognized as a leader in music education and advocacy.
In July, McManus took on his current role at UCLA, directing the “Solid Gold Sound” marching band, pep bands, and athletic ensembles while serving as Assistant Professor of Music. His arrival comes as UCLA prepares to celebrate the marching band’s 100th anniversary.
Despite his impressive résumé, McManus kept his focus on students during his THS visit. He shared stories from his career, emphasized the value of hard work and dedication, and encouraged the Raider band to embrace every opportunity music provides.
“It’s always special to welcome back a graduate who shows our students what is possible,” said THS Band Director Wayne Splettstoeszer. “Dr. McManus is a perfect example of where passion, discipline, and community can take you.”
For the THS Band, the visit was not only a chance to meet a successful alumnus but also a reminder that the lessons they are learning now extend far beyond the band room.
