A view of the school from the vantage point of senior parking. Some students are frustrated their spots are so far away.
Although THS seniors appreciate the administration’s effort to secure a senior parking lot, the new space has sparked a number of safety concerns. Located near the old THS Tech Wing, the lot sits adjacent to an active construction zone separated only by a wire fence. Students worry about the close proximity to heavy machinery, trucks, and debris.
The lot’s layout has also presented challenges. Senior Sara He said the “parking lot [and spaces] feel really tight,” making it difficult to park without risking scratches or dents. Pedestrian safety is another concern, as students often need to cross the main aisle while dozens of new drivers navigate the lot each morning. The risk of fender benders—or worse—has become a daily worry.
Morning drop-off adds to the difficulty. Buses share the same one-lane road used by student drivers. Because buses have the right of way, students sometimes must swerve or stop abruptly, creating delays and potentially unsafe conditions. Bus drivers have voiced similar concerns, noting that the presence of student drivers makes maneuvering larger vehicles more challenging.
Limited walkways compound the issue for pedestrians. Students walking from their cars to the building are often caught between moving vehicles and the construction zone, with only a small concrete barrier for protection.
While the lot is still new, students hope for adjustments. Suggested improvements include clearer parking lines, additional supervision during peak times, or added barriers between the lot and construction site. Many believe these changes could make the lot safer and more functional for everyone.
