Government shutdown is affecting services for families.
On October 1, 2025, at 12:01 AM, the federal government shut down. With a looming deadline for SNAP benefits to expire, families are wondering how they will get by without food assistance.
The “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program” (SNAP), which is also known as EBT, and the “SNAP for Women, Infants, and Children.” These benefit programs provide money to low-income families for food; without these, many could struggle.
U.S. Representative Jahana Hayes, who represents Torrington, noted that these benefits “could be delayed or interrupted entirely.”
Several health care benefits have also been impacted by the shutdown, as well, such as Veteran Affairs resources. Resources for veterans have been restricted, including outreach, career counseling, transition assistance, and cemetery grounds maintenance. Regional VA Offices will also be closed. VA Offices will impact the health care that veterans receive, among other things.
Federal Employees will have to work without pay during the government shutdown, but because of the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act, which “requires retroactive pay for furloughed employees following the end of a government shutdown.” This means that after the shutdown is over, the employees will all be reimbursed for their work.
No end to the shutdown is in sight.
