What is Battle of Classes?

The Battle of the Classes is a school-wide competition with the intention of students bringing pride to the school. This has been a tradition at Torrington High School since 2011, but since there is a new building this event will change due to certain circumstances.

Points

Inside the new THS building many teachers do not have their own classrooms, this makes it difficult for students to find the staff that they could be looking for. This is the case for Ms Sullivan too, the teacher responsible for collecting points. Ms. Sullivan stated, “Spirit week is the main way to earn points”. This is important because if students cannot find Sullivan, they can miss out. Sullivan said “It’ll be tricky for students to find me for point redemption, but my location will be posted in Google Classroom and printed on posters.” This will be great for the students so each can redeem their points

Upcoming changes

The biggest change coming to the Battle of the Classes in my opinion is that the Student Council plans to create new challenges for Spirit Week according to Sullivan. At this moment we don’t know what they will settle on but students can refer challenges they’d like to see to the student council. The next Spirit week is on the way, starting Valentines Day week.

Ideas on Battle of the Classes

The thoughts on the Battle of the Classes are mixed. Marchand said “Some years the kids get really into it, especially recently” but then he also touched on students being engulfed in the competition, letting it get to their heads too much. Marchand stated, “I’ve gone back and forth on this, it seems decisive among the classes, but turns out to be a really fun time”. The competition overall brings a lot of school pride out of the students but can sometimes be too much.

“I think it is fun but I think the competition needs to be hyped more with other options for points need to be done,” says Suheidy T., a senior.

“It’s only fun when the weeks are fun,” commented Aniya P., another senior.

Seniors seem united in one opinion – winning “We are going to win Battle of the Classes,” Gianni Lugo said in period 2 on Friday, echoed by his classmates who threw in teh comment, “#NoCompetition.”

Point History

Sullivan stated, “Sophomores have only won twice; Juniors and Seniors hold the highest win percentage.” The reason for this can be that the underclassmen are in a new environment, which could lead to nervousness or shyness. At this moment the Juniors are in the lead with Seniors and then Sophomores, and Freshman. The winning team will get an honorable trophy, a class picture and even bragging rights.
