Students of THS recently took part in a very exciting event called Model UN.  Model UN stands for Model United Nations.  Mrs. Siegel, the THS teacher who helped advise the students says each student was assigned to a committee where they then discuss the governments of different countries, and have to work with other countries to develop compromises and overcome certain scenarios.

This trip took place at Yale University, where student Xavier Vega says Woosley Hall was constructed with very beautiful architecture.  Aside from all of the beauty, one downside to this experience was the very late nights.  THS Junior Kajeda Fraiser states, “On the first day alone. you don’t get out of committee until 11:30. It’s safe to say that well past all of our bedtimes. On a perfect day, we would all get to bed by 1!”

Back to the upside of things, students of THS had many good takeaways from the event that have helped them learn about government issues all over the globe.  Just as student Nathan Pepler says, “I learned a lot more about current world problems.” Vega says his biggest takeaway was “to not be afraid of judgment or to speak at all.”

Students had a lot of fun representing different nations.  Kajeda shared part of her own personal experience, “My committee was the United Nations Commission on Drugs and I was the delegate of Bangladesh. During my time in committee, I was able to make short-term alliances that would have reflected the current state of Bangladesh.”

One of the major takeaways overall was that it allowed students to speak freely and express themselves with no judgment. The group is really looking forward to attending next year; speak to your social studies teacher if you are interested.
