Mrs. Brewers UConn Allied Health class had a visit from LifeStar on Friday the 25th. All three of her classes took an in-house field trip. LifeStar landed on the soccer field for all the students to see. Students got to meet all the LifeStar crew, as well as the firefighters who helped land the helicopter.
This is the second year that LifeStar landed at THS for UConn Allied Health. Mrs. Brewer being an EMT had some connections to get them down here with their whole crew. She feels it’s a great opportunity for the students to get immersed in a paramedic, nurse, respiratory therapist, or EMS profession.
Chris, a flight nurse/paramedic from LifeStar has been working there for years and loves his job. When asked why being at LifeStar was the right fit for him, he said, “I don’t know, it just felt right and I knew that LifeStar was the best fit for me.”. Chris talked about how he liked the fact that it was a flying ICU and they could treat patients however they felt best, and didn’t need to go to a doctor and get the ok.
After the students got to look around and inside the LifeStar helicopter, the whole crew went into the little theater and had a Q&A. All of the LifeStar members answered many questions all from the students about every aspect of their job. It was such a great experience and opportunity for students to able to see LifeStar and learn so much about it without it being their worst day. Hopefully we are able to see LifeStar back next year!
