Have you ever wondered how other Thanksgiving tables might differ from yours? Thanksgiving in other cultures can be very different from just the standard American Thanksgiving. Spanish teacher Mary Costa and Italian teacher Jamie Roxas weighed in on some cultural differences they know.
Roxas stated that Italian households have more than just turkey and mashed potatoes. “You will most likely find soup on the table, Italian wedding to be specific. You can also definitely find pasta on the table, most likely lasagna.”
Costa expressed that turkey is not always the main protein in Hispanic households. Pernil, a type of slow-roasted pork, is a staple on the Thanksgiving table. “I would say pernil is a favorite, also pigeon peas and rice are another. But we still have the traditional turkey and mashed potatoes as well, it’s a nice mixture of everything.”
Cultural differences also exist in the way the day happens. Roxas expresses the importance of time and organization. “Italians don’t rush, they take their time with each course, appetizers, main course, and then dessert.” She noted that “Americans tend to rush and want to eat everything at once” which she feels “makes it harder for families to connect and talk to one another.”
However, Costa says the atmosphere is the key. “It’s really like a party for us, lots of dancing and music, the food comes out all together and we all just have a good time together.”
