The Play That Goes Wrong was performed at the Torrington High School Little Theatre on their “opening” night December 6, 2024. The play was about a murder mystery performance in which the unfortunate theatre company encountered many mishaps. The play is set in the lounge of a grand mansion called the “Haversham Manor”. The genre of the play is comedy whereas the style of this piece was farce. Overall, I thought this play was amazing. The acting was phenomenal and I really enjoyed it. The audience, including myself, laughed so much throughout this play.
The cast as a whole did very amazing. They worked together to make this play come to life. Actor Giovanni Quinones in the roles of “Max” and “Cecil” showed great performance and over the past few months that I have known Gio, I would say that he did better than I expected. Gio used the humorous aspects of his personality to make his two characters shine and stand out. The first character played was Cecil. His role in the play was the brother of the person murdered and the secret lover of his brother’s fiance. Giovanni made one particular scene enjoyable when he was on his deathbed and his character pulled out shiny red tinsel and danced around with it. The character was actually “stabbed” with a sword after he broke his, which made the scene funnier.
One costume I really liked was the red dress worn by actor Jocelyn Piechowski for her character “Florence”. The dress added to her features which played a huge part in this role because Florence is seen as a manipulator who uses her looks to get her way. The lighting also added to the show because it made scenes where anyone was pronounced dead pretty funny. The lighting would go from yellow/white lights to red lights. There was an interesting sound effect which was the song “Do I Wanna Know” by the Arctic Monkeys which kept replaying, I found it very funny because it always played at the most random moments. One part of the show that did catch me off guard was when the walls fell but it did play a big part in the play.
Overall, I think the play was interesting and a wonderful experience for the audience and my peers. The show was worth going to see because it brought joy and laughter.
