Torrington High School students have officially transitioned to their new school building, embracing a fresh start in a modern environment. embrace their new high school building after transitioning to the new school mid-year.
On Wednesday, January 22, students entered their first day of school at the new facility, after nearly three years of construction. The sleek, updated design has brought both excitement and nostalgia as students and staff adjust to the change and form their opinions on their new school.
For many, the upgrade was long overdue. “[The classrooms] are a lot cleaner, and there’s more space to put lab materials in a science class,” said senior Emerson Knittel. Many students appreciate the improved science labs, updated facilities, and modernized spaces.
Senior Faiyaz Hossain also noted the aesthetic improvements: “The theatre and cafeteria look much nicer in comparison. They are much more modern in style.” The new cafeteria is a large space open to the hallway, with large windows filling the area with a natural feel.
However, not everyone has embraced the transition so easily. Some students miss the familiarity of the old building, which holds years of memories. “I often think about the old building because I made all of my high school memories in that old building and it is sad to see it go,” said senior Ava Bavol.
While the unfamiliarity takes some getting used to, many students recognize the benefits of the new space and fresh atmosphere; “It’s a new environment, you get the vibe you’re going to something unknown,” said senior Aiden Mabe.
The new building also offers different opportunities for both students and teachers. One standout feature is the new teacher workspaces, which Mr. Cahill appreciates: “It feels like the staff has been more like a community whereas in the old building, they were broken into more groups.”
Another favorite of many is the lighting. The new building is covered in tall windows from floor to ceiling, allowing lots of sunlight to enter the classrooms and hallways. “[The lights] seem nice and bright and there’s a lot of natural light from outside which is really good to see,” said Colleen Motuzick, one of the school nurses.
“I love the variety of seating options in the hallways, especially the tall tables and chairs. It makes me feel like I’m on a college campus and provides a great space to study without feeling confined to a classroom, commented senior Arianna Skarupa.
As students and staff continue to settle in, the new building represents more than just an updated space- it’s the start of a new chapter for Torrington High School.
