Oops! Openai.com is not available.” This result appears on student computers at THS if the student tries to use any website that produces AI-generated content. Is this fair? Some local high schools are encouraging students to use the power of artificial intelligence, believing it to be the wave of the future. THS teachers and students weighed in on the pros and cons of this new technology.
According to Ms. Kane, Torrington High School’s Humanities Coach, “A recent study showed that around 70% of employers would rather hire somebody with AI experience than without it.” Mr. Scott and many teachers see potential in AI. Mr. Scott said teachers should “help students use it as a tool.”
A teacher at Terryville School says that they are looking at how to integrate AI into their curriculum. Ms. Katherine Avcollie, an English teacher in Terryville, said hopes to introduce students to tools like Diffit. Diffit can be used to dumb down complicated vocabulary and make work more comprehensible to students. She also provided a link to Edadvance’s Sidekick AI, this AI is used to teach students how to use their different AI tools.
She argued that teachers “need to develop policies to ensure we are protecting students from potential data breaches.” THS Coach Ms. Kane has a similar concern, saying “AI is a privacy threat to our staff and students.”
Ms. Norige is concerned that “some students may not learn how to learn correctly.” Junior Jonathon Alvarez isn’t worried about data breaches, but instead about intellectual property. AI is “taking away creativity from students,” he said.
Of course, a big concern in education is AI-based plagiarism. Norige said every report she assigns, at least one student plagiarizes using AI. Ms Kane stated, “If students just go online typing in answers to assignments, that will definitely hurt their learning experience.” Teachers think that although AI has many cons, they can make it beneficial for students.
Artificial intelligence can be a great tool for students. Ms. Norige said, “It can be a really good tool to help students research, but they have to look out for information inaccuracies.” She also stated, “It is really good for coming up with ideas and organizing thoughts.”
Ms. Norige, Ms. Kane, and Ms. Avcollie all stated they use AI to help with lesson planning, researching, and thinking of creative ideas.
Junior Mario Jadan believes that “AI is great to give creative ideas and to better understand questions.” He also said that he thinks AI makes education easier, and that you can simplify answers.”
Everyone agrees that how schools handle AI will need to be carefully considered. Ms. Avcollie said, “I see significant potential in AI in education but I also have concerns about it.”
