The THS girls’ volleyball team had a pink-out volleyball game last Friday, 10/18, raising money for breast cancer through a raffle. The THS gym was decked out with pink decorations, as well as the girls in pink jerseys with their numbers. The team played Oxford and won 3-2 which was needed after the girls played Oxford earlier in the season and lost.
Head coach Nina Ferrante spoke of the earlier Oxford game, “This was also the first game we played to 5 sets which can be very demanding and tiring for all players. From the time we played them in September to our most recent game, the team developed a mantra to play by and a stronger mindset. The team was able to win this time with their perseverance and hard work!”.
Varsity starter Arianna Skarupa agreed the team has improved, giving them the opportunity to beat Oxford at Pink Out. “We’ve often started matches strong, taking opponents to five sets, only to fall short in the end—just like in our first game against Oxford, which was frustrating. However, for the rematch, the excitement of the Pink Out game, with the gym decorated and the energy of the crowd, really helped fuel our focus and determination.” Having the crowd booming and loud in the stands can really positively affect the girls on the court.
The team has clearly improved this season seeing as their record went up. Coach Ferrante also commented that “One of the biggest improvements from this season has been the increase in effective communication from players on the court with each other.” The volleyball team is looking strong for next year if they can keep up the good work they’ve built to.
