On November 6th, THS students visited the UConn Storrs campus with a guided tour. This tour consisted of seeing the campus, buildings, and the accommodations that they provide for students. For the past two or three years, UConn has reached out to THS about conducting these trips and funding them.
According to Mr. Dickens, “We are what’s called an alliance district in Connecticut with a lower income, so they offer to pay for us to come.” He expresses the importance of these trips and the positive impact they can have on students that are determining their futures. Those who may not have the opportunity to tour colleges themselves are given the chance to see what their lives may look like on a college campus.
Although the overall thoughts on the trip were positive, Mr. Dickens stated that he wishes that they “showed a little more, like the dorms, and stuff like that. But I think it is still beneficial to see, they have a lot of new buildings that they are constantly working on.”
For many on this trip, a key moment for many on the field trip was meeting UConn women’s basketball star Paige Bueckers. Senior Kel Camara believes that it was, “a remarkable moment that I will never forget.” Similarly to the students Mr. Dickens also claimed that the most memorable part of this trip was “that was pretty exciting and seeing the response that it brought out in the students.”
The overall feedback from this trip is that it was a positive experience for many, and helped give students an insight into their futures. The goal of these trips is to help our students feel more at ease about this next chapter in their lives.
