Since Senor Zarazu’s retirement last year, many students have questioned whether or not the Diversity Day assembly will continue on as a THS tradition. We need to worry no more – Senora Costa has stepped into the role!
“So many of them were worried if it was going to happen. We had so many asking every day if it was going to happen so that really drove it home that it needed to be a tradition here at THS,” shared Spanish teacher Senora Costa who has stepped up to run Diversity Day Senora Brennan.
Senora Costa felt that students needed to be represented at school, so it was important for her to carry on the tradition. Almost all students agree that Diversity Day is an important part of THS. Senior Gianni Lugo sees value in the day because it “Shows different cultures through dances and brings the school together.

But Diversity Day is not entirely dependent on who runs it, the students play an equally important role in making sure the day runs smoothly and help is always needed. Central and South American, and Caribbean countries seem to be the most well-represented each year. However, per Costa, “regions like East Asia are underrepresented.”
Help is also needed to put the actual day together, doing things like sound and decorations. Last year’s assembly was cut short due to technical difficulties which Senora Costa is ensuring won’t happen again by “sound checking all the files beforehand so that we know that it is compatible with whatever system we use that day because that’s what caused the malfunction.”
This celebration is a very important THS tradition and it can’t go on without student involvement. Students can either speak to Senora Brennan or Senora Costa to get involved with diversity day performances.
