Just in time for the Spring season, Sweetgreen – a salad bar aiming to “reinvent” fast food – opened in Canton Connecticut. The franchise boasts fresh ingredients and a mission of sustainability for the planet and customers. What started off as three college students looking for a better way to eat has transpired into an innovative franchise slated to become carbon-neutral by 2027.
Seniors Grace Donaghy and Syzmon Sadowski attended Sweetgreen’s grand opening on February 18th. Grace had the Guacamole Greens dish, featuring a romaine base with roasted chicken, avocado, and lime cilantro vinaigrette, among other veggies. She described the flavor profile as familiar, fresh, and elevated: “I felt like Bella Hadid…I felt like this is what a doctor eats for lunch every day.” She adds, “The chicken had a similar texture to Chipotle, but the flavor profile was different. [The bowl was] crunchy, earthy, and fresh.”
Syzmon had the Chicken Pesto Parm bowl with roasted chicken, spicy broccoli, herbed quinoa, Sweetgreen hot sauce, and a baby spinach base. He commented that the dish was flavorful yet well-balanced: “[It was] a nice mild spice that only lasted while I was eating the food. I liked it because I can eat it a bit fast and not have to wait for another bite.” Syzmon also commented on the affordability of the meal, which was roughly $40 for two bowls and two drinks. “It was too expensive for what it was.”
Despite his personal opinion, he and Grace both agreed that with the inflated value of fresh vegetables, while the prices weren’t always affordable, they were justified.
Overall, if you’re looking for a well-balanced and freshly prepared meal while on the go, Sweetgreen offers a clean, bright atmosphere to sit down and enjoy a meal you can trust has been ethically sourced.
