Mrs. McGillicuddy’s UCONN ECE ERTH1051 geology course helped distribute plants to all of the science teachers at THS. Thanks to a very generous grant from Adopt-A-Classroom.org and Subara of America, Inc, Mrs. M purchased tropical plants like Siam Agloanemas, (Agloanema commutatum “Siam”), ZZs (Zamioculcus zamiifolia), variegated rubber trees (Ficus elastica), and pothos (Epiprenum aureum). The plants were distributed throughout our science classrooms in order to:
- give students the opportunity observe real-life biological processes like photosynthesis, transpiration, germination, and growth
- let students can use them to design investigations in horticulture (light, water, soil, fertilizer, pH, gravity effects, etc.);
- support biology, chemistry (nutrient cycles, photosynthesis equations), physics (light and energy), Earth science, and environmental science courses;
- have the plants serve as living models for genetics, ecology, and life cycles;
- and, reinforce topics like ecosystems, carbon cycle, oxygen production, and human impact on the environment.
We are so grateful for the opportunity to beautify our new school while enhancing both the physical and mental well-being of students and staff, and creating valuable educational opportunities.
