For all students at THS in search for some volunteer hours or things to do, there are lots of current and upcoming volunteer opportunities. If you’re able or willing to work out of town, Waterbury has a program called Mission of Mercy. Mrs. Norige, a science teacher at THS states, “Mission of Mercy is a program that provides free dental care to the underserved, it’s a great opportunity for students to get out and gain some volunteer hours.” This program is in need of some high school volunteers to help them out and keep them in order.
As for a more local opportunity, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital takes volunteers, which can be checked out on the Hartford Healthcare website. With this program, there is a wide selection of options you could pick from regarding what you want to help with. Many of these volunteer hours are on the weekend or later after school, so it can be a good opportunity for those with a tighter and more busy schedule, while still being able to give them the healthcare experience they need.
Guidance counselor Mr. Dickens stated that within the next couple of months, elementary schools will start taking high school students to help the little kids after school and attend or help out at some events. There will also be an upcoming internship program starting at THS allowing our students to get some extra volunteer hours they may need.
In the mean-time, there are always local food pantries to start off any volunteering experience. The guidance office constantly releases both volunteer and job opportunities for students, so make sure to keep an eye out on the class of 25-29 google classrooms.
