Torrington 7th & 8th graders are entering the high school starting the 2025-2026 school year.
The school district of Torrington CT was granted a fund to build a new high school building, and now 7th and 8th graders are invited too. Some are concerned about how that will affect students.
According to Principal Scott, the students won’t interact with each other much as the middle schoolers have their own wing, but the students will share the music rooms and busses.
Community members and students have wondered if exposure to older students will be harmful to the younger ones. For example, many high school students use bad language because it’s a part of their vocabulary, meaning the younger students will grow up faster and that isn’t a good thing. High school students are a lot more prone to fighting, disobeying rules, and being disrespectful because of their age and hormones, that is not a good environment to have middle schoolers around.
Others have said these concerns are not relevant. Many districts in the state, such as Region 10 (Lewis Mills), have combined 7-12 schools without issue. Only time will tell.
