Torrington High School’s very own Mike McKenna was awarded recently with the Meritorious Service Award. Mr. Mckenna has been a health teacher and the athletic director at THS for many years.
“I was very honored. Anytime you are recognized by peers it’s the best honor you can get, the recognition of all the hard work, all the hours.” Mr. McKenna says. Mr. McKenna truly loves what he does and loves THS. Mckenna is definitely a power house here at Torrington, and does so much more than people know, he definetly holds things together.
Some of his favorite parts of being here is “I get to work with great coaches, there’s not one coach I would get rid of. I tell them all the time they can’t quit until I do” he says. Mr. McKenna also loves all the students and athletes he works with while being athletic director.
Mr. Mckenna said that every year they have to choose a student to receive a scholar award, and when deciding he sees all the great kids he can’t pick between. He sees his athletes are at the top of the academics list. “What a nice problem to have to have nice kids who are great athletes and they don’t embarrass the school.”
“Any time an individual gets an award it’s a very positive reflection of the whole school” Mr. Scott adds about the award and how it looks on Torrington. McKenna has gotten many awards in his career that have had a very positive reflection of the THS staff.
