Torrington High School’s girls soccer team holds a special bond that shines through in every game and practice.
Torrington High School’s girls soccer team is about halfway through their 2024 season; their first season with their new head coach, Coach Alexis. This group of athletes excel on the field through their unwavering dedication, positivity, and encouragement. This year’s captains include senior Danielle Iannacito, junior Avery Goodwin, junior Ashley Pascual, and junior Annabel O’marra. After their former head coach, Coach Mario, retired, Coach Alexis Trrell took over as the new head coach, and added to the positivity that this special team carries.
One core strength of the team is their close friendship and family-like bond. Many girls on the Varsity soccer team have played together since elementary school. Junior Avalee Fritch states, “We all get along very well, and I feel like that’s because we’ve played together for so long.” Fritch explains how their close friendship has strengthened their support for one another and built a positive environment.
Fritch responds to the question regarding how the team differs from the past: “I feel like as a team we’re a lot closer. Last year there was kind of a divide from the upperclassmen and underclassmen.” This sense of unity has improved their atmosphere and performance on the field. Junior Avery Goodwin answers the same question, “But I also feel like our team is working way better with one another, I feel like on the field we have been playing more like a team compared to other seasons.”
Mr. Horton, a history teacher at Torrington High School, has watched a few of the girls soccer games. He shares the effect of the girl’s strong connection that he has seen from the stands, “even when something went wrong they maintained a positive attitude and consistent level of effort.” As a coach himself, Mr. Horton believes that positivity from an uplifting team is very important.
This year’s girls soccer team has been recognized by many for their family-like atmosphere and supportive environment. “Since we are always lifting each other our team morale and energy is very high which is very important for a successful season,” states Goodwin. The girls look forward to finishing off their season strong.
