The Raider Report is now honoring two athletes each month for all of the hard work and effort they put in each day.
The athletes for the month of October: Junior Avery Goodwin for girls soccer and Senior Edwin Rivera for boys football! Read below to find out what really makes each of these athletes so great.
EJ Rivera, senior, was nominated for the male athlete of the month for the month of October. Rivera, who has been playing tackle football since he was 5 years old, is super honored to receive the nomination, giving credit to his teammates and coaches: “We have overcome a lot this season and I am lucky to play with such great people.”
One of Rivera’s multiple coaches has the same positive view on him. Coach Rusty Elliot is proud of how all-around Rivera is: “He knows when to have fun and when to be serious. He cares greatly about succeeding in the classroom and on the field.’’
Rivera hopes to continue their 6-0 undefeated streak against the Naugatuck Greyhounds tomorrow, November 1st. He urges students and staff to show up with Raider Pride, and to “support the boys.”
Female athlete of the month, Junior soccer player Avery Goodwin, shares similar characteristics to Rivera.
Goodwin, who has played soccer for 5 years, has only amazing things to say about the THS soccer program, from the players and coaches, to practices and games. “There is a lot of support that comes from THS soccer, from my team, coaches, and parents. I always feel uplifted, no matter what the scores or records say.”
Danielle Iannacito, who is co-captains with Goodwin, feels supported and uplifted by Goodwin herself. “She’s not just a hardworking teammate and devoted to her sport, but she is extremely positive and kind to everyone on the team along the way.”
