Recently, Ms. Sullivan’s journalism class were left feeling “happy and energized” after a field trip to Columbia University. The trip was for theThe Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) Fall Conference and offered practical strategies and opportunities to the reporters of THS’s school newspaper.
The CSPA Fall Conference was an event held at Columbia University on Monday, November 3rd, of this year. It offered over 60 different sessions on writing, editing, designing and more, providing helpful strategies and opportunities towards student journalists.
Students got to take photos, discover all kinds of food around the premises, learn about and figure out new strategies, and buy books and merchandise.
Every student who was able to participate has their own unique experience and perspective towards the trip. Neveah Long shares her experience of the trip, saying, “The teachers were really chill, and they’re passionate about what they were teaching, and they interacted with the students.”
Ava Wonsitler felt the program was well organized and helpful. “Everyone who’d you ask for help, whether it was a student or staff was really friendly and inviting. Every single question that I heard [answered from a professor] whether I had it or not, gave really good advice.”
This is actually the 2nd trip to Columbia University produced so far for this class, one being held last year. The trip, of course, is really costly, but Ms. Sullivan ensures that she is “looking forward to doing this again for the many years that will come!”
