On April 1st, students in Mrs Riggs UCONN Individual and Human development course took a trip to the University of Connecticut to sit in on a college lecture. Around 7:20 in the morning, students left and made it back to the school just in time for dismissal.
Riggs stated that it was a good opportunity and that ¨Students were excited to be on a real college campus and appreciated the opportunity to see what a real college class is like.” It was also shown to Riggs through reflections that being in that position helped them feel more confident about their ability to succeed at that level.
One thing to surprise Riggs is how quickly students ¨adapted to the lecture format ¨ college lectures often move at smarter paces than high school courses. She expressed how valuable she believes this field trip is as it gives students the opportunity to see college content taught in a true college setting.
Students had a bit of free time at the arrival and just before leaving campus. During these moments students did a variety of things such as checking out the bookstore, food court, and taking class photos.
Riggs stated that she would do this field trip with future students expressing the thought that ¨helps to bridge the gap between high school and higher education¨. It is described to be ¨meaning and a motivating¨ experience for students, which is stated ¨ aligns perfectly with the Early College Experience program the class is run through.
