On Sunday, December 21, Torrington High School transformed into a winter celebration as families from across the city gathered for the Holiday Spirit Project, a free community event focused on inclusion, generosity, and holiday cheer.
Organized through a collaboration between Torrington High School’s Raider Café, Friendly Hands Food Bank, and several local businesses, the Holiday Spirit Project was designed to ensure that all families, regardless of financial circumstances, could enjoy the same festive experience. Friendly Hands Food Bank helped organize and invite families in need throughout Torrington, while also coordinating gift distribution for children who might otherwise go without during the holidays.
The afternoon featured a wide variety of activities that filled the school with excitement. Children decorated cookies, had their faces painted, and posed for photos with Santa. Police cars and fire trucks were on display, and families enjoyed free horse-drawn carriage rides around campus.
One of the most memorable moments of the event came when Santa himself arrived by carriage as the Torrington High School choir sang “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” creating a picture-perfect holiday scene that drew smiles from children and adults alike.
Food was generously donated by local businesses, including pizza from Pizzeria Marzano’s, finger sandwiches from Jimmy’s Store, and hot chocolate from The Nutmeg Fudge Company. Additional treats and cookie-decorating stations were provided by the Raider Café, highlighting the program’s ongoing commitment to community service.
The event was supported by an impressive group of volunteers. Junior ROTC members, students, teachers, and staff all helped ensure the day ran smoothly. Although it was the first year of the Holiday Spirit Project, turnout exceeded expectations. “When you do the first one, you never know who’s going to show up,” said Chef Tom, one of the event organizers. “But a lot of people showed up, and it was a great thing.”
In addition to the festivities, the Holiday Spirit Project addressed a need that often goes overlooked: gifts for older children. Friendly Hands Food Bank organized gift distribution for children in need across Torrington, and organizers encouraged donations of gift cards for students ages 12 and up so they could choose something meaningful for themselves.
More than just a holiday celebration, the Holiday Spirit Project showcased the power of partnership between schools, local businesses, and community organizations. By opening its doors and bringing people together, Torrington High School helped create a welcoming space where families could connect, celebrate, and feel supported.
With such a successful first year, organizers hope the Holiday Spirit Project will continue to grow into a lasting tradition, one that reflects the spirit of generosity and community at the heart of Torrington.
