As the winter sports season comes to an end, we should highlight the supporters on the sidelines who boost spirit and morale – the cheerleaders. Over the years, the cheer team has grown not only in numbers but in quality. With new stunts, equipment, and uniforms, THS is experiencing a new age – a revival of the cheer team.
“We have 20 people on our team, so we have five different stunt groups. Last year we had about three, so there’s a big change,” says Angelina Ciesco, senior and captain of the cheer team, elaborating on the growing number of cheerleaders.
According to Ciesco, the team works hard to deliver intricate stunts during our games and pep rallies, lifting spirits and energizing our students to engage in the games through cheering just like they do.
The hard work helped the team take third place in the February 19th Invitational.
Team members suggest that their close relationship in both football and basketball seasons also helps their success. Ciesco says, “If you ask me, I have the most fun each year. Cheer gave me a lot of friends, new friendships, with a lot of different people.”
She elaborated by saying, “We’ve seen the team build a warm and inviting atmosphere, encouraging many freshmen to join up.”
Junior Andrea-Julie Mukendi agreed. “I’d say I’m pretty close with everybody; we all hang out together outside of school, so it really helps us in practice because we’re so familiar with everyone.”
It’s not just Mukendi expressing the friendly atmosphere of the team, it’s everyone involved. This tight-knit and welcoming bond of the team leads them to create these intricate stunts that we all know and love.
Make sure to congratulate the cheerleaders for their hard work during the pep rallies, games, and this competitive season.
