With a brand new school came the appearance of something THS hasn’t seen in 4 years, our very own tennis courts! The Raiders have a large pool of both boy and girl players this year and are currently working hard pushing through their season and embracing the new space.
The girls coach, Maggie McGillicuddy, says there is one problem that has come with these fresh new courts… There’s so much space! McGillicuddy claims “ Now that we have four courts, we’re like, oh my God, we can do that. It’s a very, very good problem to have”
Richard Dubois, head boys coach emphasizes that tennis is a very “technical” sport. The larger courts give the team more opportunities to practice more competitively. At practice Dubois ensures to keep the boys in check while maintaining an environment filled with “high energy and positive energy.”
With a larger number of boy Dubois has taken in an additional coach, Jonathan Horton. According to Horton, “We try to design drills that simulate the pressure of games.”
On the girls team senior captain, Angelina Ciesco claims the team is like a “family.” Similar to what the boys coaches claim the girls have also had the opportunity to practice more competitively. Ciesco says, “We have a lot of fun on the team but when it’s game day we get serious, it’s a good balance”
One underclassmen that has caught Ciesco’s attention is Kendal Goletz. Goletz is only a sophomore but plays Varsity and was put into singles two which is a big accomplishment for a younger player claims Ciesco.
On the boys side senior varsity player, Daniel Smith, says “we’ve had a lot of ups and downs but it’s definitely been a fun season.” Smith also expressed how great it has been to finally have there own courts saying “It’s good to have a place to call home”
With their new facilities there are endless possibilities for the Torrington Tennis teams of today and tomorrow. The girls and boys just recently had their senior nights and continue to practice for their upcoming games./
