Boys Basketball, 2024-2025. Will you be the next player?
Looking for a Winter Sport? Tuesday, November 18, the winter sports will be having their annual interest meetings. These sports include: Basketball, Indoor Track & Field, Boys Swim, Wrestling, and Ice Hockey. Read below to find out what the sports are and some athlete insights on why you should join them.
Boys and Girls Basketball
Basketball is a team sport that you must try out for if you want to be one the team. There is a Freshman team, a Junior Varsity team, and a Varsity team. According to Junior athlete and team captain, Dominic Evan-Lewis, people should join basketball because it “teaches you how it feels to struggle.” Lewis emphasizes that it is also “a place of unity.” Whether you’re looking for a place to show off your hoop skills or looking to gain some life lessons beyond the court, THS basketball may be the sport for you.
Boys and Girls Track & Field
Track & Field is a multi-event competitive sport split into six main categories: sprints, mid-distance, distance, hurdles, jumps, and throws. Practices for some are outside, others are in the gym or weight room. According to senior thrower, Makayla Rodriguez, track has “a good sense of community, it is good for people who don’t like the process of tryouts.” In his own personal experience, senior sprinter, Devin Ballard, also claims that track “boosts my social skills, I’ve met hundreds of people my age through it.” Ballard and Rodriguez both can agree that track not only introduces you to new people, but also is a sport that focuses on self-improvement.
Boys Swim
Boys’ swim is another multi-event competitive sport. Its practices go from Monday to Saturday and are a combination of pool training at the YMCA and dry land training at Torrington High School. Given the small team these past few years, Senior Matthew Tsai says that the team is “like a family.” If you’re looking for a more close-knit community, swimming may be a good option for you.
Wrestling
Wrestling is a combat sport that takes place at Gilbert Northwestern High School (GNH). Torrington High School does not have its own official wrestling team, so GNH opens its doors yearly to create a co-op team consisting of Gilbert, Torrington, and Oliver Wolcott Tech athletes. Senior Anthony Cangiano is currently going into his fourth year wrestling for the team, he says that wrestling has been “a life-changing experience. Not only makes you physically stronger, but mentally.”
Ice Hockey
Ice hockey is another sport that does not take place at THS. The Housatonic Mountaineers is a mix of players from Torrington, Housatonic, Northwestern, and Oliver Wolcott Tech. Last year, the team consisted of only two Torrington athletes. The team is in high demand for new players, so if you’re looking to try something new and outside of the usual sports loop, ice hockey may be the sport for you.
To learn more about the sports: who the coaches are, start/tryout dates, practice schedules, etc. Attend the interest meetings on November 18 during advisory. Attending does not commit you to the sport, but it gives you an idea of what the sport entails. Good luck, Raiders! And may you all find the sport that fits you!
