Alycia Rivera is a current junior at Torrington High School. She’s the treasurer of her school’s Black Student Union Club and is currently striving for a higher position. She does outdoor track during the season and enjoys going out on a nice sunny day to throw. Her goals right now are to keep her grades in check while staying on top of her work. She wishes to upload many articles in protest of things she doesn’t like and in support of things she does. Outside of school, she spends her time playing video games, sleeping, and indulging in lots of tasty food.
Torrington High School’s new building has only been open for a short time, and while everyone agrees it looks modern and exciting, students are already noticing one big issue: the health rooms are extremely far from most classrooms.
For kids who need to go from the health wing to the fourth floor, the journey can seem like a mini hike. And with only 5 minutes to get there between classes, many students are stressed about getting marked tardy.
When asked if he believes the passing periods at THS are long enough, Rashad McFarlane responded, “it’s not okay if you’re coming from the health wing, but otherwise it’s fine.” His concern mirrors that of many students coming from either the health wing or the gym.
One of our reporters, Jaisa Oliver, set out to prove that the 5-minute passing time was not enough if your class was far removed from the health wing. Check out her video attached.
According to teachers, the administrators have recommended that some grace period be offered to students if they are coming from or going to health. It is not clear at this time if students are getting that grace period or if they are being marked tardy as soon as the bell rings.
